FBI Director Continues to Mislead Congress About Trump Prosecution Firings

Justice Connection condemns FBI Director Kash Patel’s evasive and misleading testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee yesterday about personnel he terminated because they were assigned to investigate President Trump. 

At his Senate confirmation hearing last year, Director Patel testified under oath that he would honor the FBI’s internal review process and that no one would be terminated for case assignments. He has broken that promise over and over again.

Director Patel has fired more than 20 FBI employees who worked on the Arctic Frost or the Mar-a-Lago classified documents cases. He personally signed each of their termination letters.

Under questioning yesterday by Sen. Adam Schiff, Director Patel misleadingly testified that none of these agents were fired because of their case assignments. Instead, he stated they were fired because they “weaponized law enforcement.” That claim doesn’t pass the laugh test, and flies in the face of Attorney General Blanche’s claim in March that Director Patel “cleaned house” by removing those who worked on the Trump prosecutions.

There is no definition of “weaponization” that an FBI employee can follow. Instead, FBI employees can only do what those fired for being assigned to work on the Mar-a-Lago and Arctic Frost cases did: follow FBI protocols, take investigative steps under the supervision of FBI and DOJ leadership, and comply with the law. 

Director Patel also claimed yesterday that the terminations were a result of recommendations by the FBI’s Inspection Division. Yet none were provided the due process FBI’s policies require, and that Director Patel committed to follow. Those fired were not afforded the opportunity to hear the accusations against them and to provide evidence or testimony to rebut it. 

Since becoming Director of the FBI, Kash Patel has personally directed at least 88 experienced FBI agents and analysts to be fired or forced out without due process. Almost all of these employees were given termination letters personally signed solely by Director Patel. As of today, Patel has a total of 1 year, 6 months and 27 days with the FBI. These agents and analysts that Patel fired during his tenure resulted in the loss of more than 1,000 years of combined FBI experience.
