Justice Connection today launched a series of online dashboards that make monthly case data released by the Department of Justice accessible to reporters and the public. 

Since the beginning of this administration, Justice Department leaders have repeatedly used fantastical statistics that are difficult to verify. Justice Connection’s goal in creating these dashboards is to bring transparency to those numbers. Journalists, lawmakers, litigators, alumni, and researchers can use this tool to investigate enforcement trends and hold department leadership accountable. 

“This administration has moved quickly to restructure the department, shift resources, change enforcement priorities, and dismantle its independence. All of that has had an impact on the kinds of cases and resolutions being pursued,” said executive director Stacey Young. “We believe this accountability tool will lead to a deeper examination of how this DOJ is carrying out its mission — and whether it’s truly keeping our communities safe.”

The new DOJ National Caseload Data page gives immediate access to criminal and civil caseload data across all 94 U.S. Attorney’s Offices. The tool allows users to see trends in criminal and civil caseloads, referrals from federal agencies, and criminal case declinations. It also includes a Case Look-Up function that lets users search for specific types of cases to conduct their own analysis. The data displayed on our dashboards comes from monthly data in DOJ’s Legal Information Office Network System (LIONS). It is published by the Executive Office of the U.S. Attorneys pursuant to a FOIA request, and has been cross-referenced with DOJ’s annual statistical reports.
